Lidl’s Rhubarb and Ginger Gin Liqueur is a seasonal delight

As the warmer weather officially kicks in, there’s nothing we’d like more than the taste of pink gin and lemonade in our glass.

Rhubarb gin is most definitely our drink of choice this summer and there’s serious choice out there.

One that constantly has us reaching out for the mixer, however, is Lidl’s Rhubarb and Ginger Gin Liqueur.

Here’s where you might ask: Can a budget supermarket offering really match up to some of the bigger names out there?

The fabulous news is Hortus delivers a super summery tipple that is comparable to some of its rivals, depending on your personal taste.

One immediate takeaway from Hortus is it’s a much sweeter rhubarb gin than say, Edinburgh Gin liqueurs or Warner Edwards Rhubarb Gin.

Lidl’s Hortus Rhubarb and Ginger Liqueur comes with a beautiful English wildlife motif on the label

Let’s start with the obvious. Part of this is the fact it’s a gin liqueur and not a gin. Naturally much sweeter than a gin and typically with less alcoholic content, a liqueur is a light and lovely way to upgrade a Prosecco or mixer alike.

Yet, Hortus’ Rhubarb and Ginger Liqueur seems even sweeter than some liqueurs. Those who think of rhubarb as tangy and ginger as spicy might find the taste a little disappointingly synthetic.

In that instance, consider Warner Edwards Rhubarb Gin or Edinburgh Gin’s equivalent liqueurs for a more authentic taste.

That’s not to take away just how delicious Lidl’s Rhubarb and Ginger Liqueur actually is – especially for its budget price point. Those with a sweet tooth will adore this liqueur.

The Perfect Serve

For the perfect serve, be sure to load up the ice over a premium lemonade. You could go for a tonic, but it can overpower the sweetness of the liqueur. Lemonade has the right contrast to the rhubarb, providing light sweetness and the perfect refreshment in one.

Alternatively, try ginger ale, on its own over ice, or as part of a Spritz with champagne.

For a garnish, consider summer berries or even a stick of rhubarb.

If you really want to go all out for summer, however, why not pop in a dissoluble rhubarb and custard drink stirrer?
