For those who love discovering the best and brightest Scottish gin around, Darnley’s Gin has just released a very special limited edition.
Called “Very Berry,” it’s the latest release in a range of new gins under the banner, Cottage Series.
As the name suggests, inspiration for the recipe was taken from the countryside in which the Darnley’s Gin cottage sits.
Expect the taste of sloe berry, rosehip and elderberry in your glass from the surroundings of the idyllic Fife-based cottage, complimented by super kelp farmed from the nearby coastline.
The overall taste is floral and fruity, giving a different taste profile to the others in the Darnley’s range.
Currently, Darnley’s have three core expressions: Original, Spiced and Spiced Navy Strength.
Created from 6 botanicals, Darnley’s Original has a delicious sweet and spicy flavour derived from elderflower, coriander, angelica and orris root. Darnley’s itself is based on Scottish history and prides itself on creating delicious London Dry Gins with quality botanicals.
This new gin is the first to come from the brand new distillery and was created by distiller Scott Gowans.
Developed on a mini still in the cottage itself, the recipe was scaled up for full distillation using a combination of traditional distillation and vapour infusion. The delicate floral flavours were embedded in the spirit by a vapour basket above the pot still.
On the nose, expect both sweet and salty notes from the sugar kelp, enhanced by the fragrance of rosehip, raspberry and hibiscus.
A taste of tart rich fruit from elderberry and sloes is finished off by a coastal mineral flavour reminiscent of a sea breeze.
To serve, simply add Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic and a red berry garnish for the perfect berry-based G&T.
Alternatively, go for grapefruit garnish or soda to really enhance the fruity flavour. The makers recommend Bon Accord Salted Pink Grapefruit Soda, which sounds truly delicious.
If you’re intrigued, just 2100 bottles of Very Berry have ever produced and are now available in a 50cl bottle at 41.5% abv.
