Today, Verdant Spirits have launched a campaign on Crowdfunder, with the aim to offer a new and exciting attraction to visitors to the Dundee. If successful, the funds raised will allow Verdant to open a visitor experience at their distillery in the heart of the city.
Verdant Spirits is our local distillery, based a mere 15 minute walk from our offices in the centre of Dundee. As such, we’ve followed their journey very closely. From their launch last April, to their incredible win at the Scottish Gin Awards 2017 just months after launching their first gin.
Phase 1 of their restoration project was completed in Spring 2017, when they combined two former industrial units on site to make one large space in which to house their distillery. The second phase will use their current home in Edward Street Mill to create the new retail and educational space.
The plan is to transform the ground floor of the mill into a visitor centre. This will include space for gin tastings and events along with a retail space. The lower-ground floor will be home to a Gin School where you can distil up a bottle of gin to your own recipe.
Edward Street Mill has a rich historical background as the former engine house to John Sharp’s ‘Jute Empire’. This building has played an enormous role in the lives of the thousands who worked in it, but it also played a vital role in the development of Dundee as a jute city. It is Verdant’s dream to breathe life back into it’s walls by creating an attraction for locals and tourists to enjoy alike.
If you would like to donate to the cause, packages start from £10. £12 will get you a ticket to a tour and tasting at the visitor centre. While £100 entitles you to a personalised bottle of Verdant Gin. However, our favourite reward has to be the year’s supply of gin and tonic!
