REVIEW: Eden Mill Love Gin Liqueur

Eden Mill Love Gin Liqueur is a limited edition release especially for Valentine’s day. Made from a base of Eden Mill’s popular Love Gin and packed full of vanilla, raspberry and meringue flavours, this would make a perfect gift for any gin lover this Valentine’s.

A little bit of background

Eden Mill were the first single site distillery and brewery to be built in Scotland. Based near St Andrews, it was their dream to bring the lost art of brewing and distilling back to the region. Eden Mill were the first to make spirits in the area in 150 years and now produce a wide range of award-winning craft beers, gins and whiskies. Most recently, Eden mill was named Gin of the Year at the Scottish Gin Awards 2018 – winning more awards than any other distillery, including London Dry Gin of the Year and Bronze in Cask Gin of the Year for their Oak Gin. They are also the Official Gin of Scottish Rugby.

Botanicals

Eden Mill’s Love Gin (the base spirit for this liqueur) is made from:

  • Juniper
  • Angelica
  • Coriander
  • Elderberry
  • Goji Berry
  • Hibiscus,
  • Marshmallow
  • Raspberry Leaf
  • Rhubarb
  • Rose

The gin is then infused with Scottish raspberries and Madagascan vanilla to create the Love Gin Liqueur.

The packaging

Eden Mill’s packaging is always on point, and this bottle is no exception. Eden Mill Love Gin Liqueur comes in their signature-shaped bottle: short and stocky with rounded shoulders. In contrast to their usual ceramic bottles, the liqueur comes in a clear bottle to show off it’s gorgeous, vibrant pink colour. The liqueur is presented in a glossed red carton, embellished with roses that represent it’s sweet, floral notes.

Perfect serve

The signature serve for Eden Mill Love Gin Liqueur is as follows:

  • 25ml Eden Mill Love Gin Liqueur
  • Aldi Sparkling Elderflower Water
  • Fresh Raspberries
  • Ice

However, it’s also tasty neat over ice, with tonic or with sparkling raspberry soda.

Eden mill were also kind enough to send us some cocktail recipes, which they developed specially for their Love Gin Liqueur

Lemon Meringue Pie

  • 25ml Limoncello
  • 1 Table spoon of Lemon Curd
  • 12.5ml Fresh Lemon
  • Garnish – Turkish Delight

Love Mojito

  • 50ml Love Gin Liqueur
  • 12.5ml Fresh Lime
  • 25ml Sugar Syrup
  • 8 Mint leaves
  • Top with Soda
  • Garnish – Folded Mint leaf with encased raspberry

On the nose

Sweetness hits your nostrils as soon as you pop the stopper of Eden Mill’s Love Gin Liqueur. It’s aroma is very nostalgic and reminds me of sweet treats I ate as a child. It smells like raspberry ripple ice-cream, Haribo Love Hearts and berry pavlova all rolled into one.

On its own

Sipped neat over ice, this liqueur is super sweet and decadent. It’s quite amazing how much they’ve managed to emulate the flavour of meringues – almost as if there were actual meringue infused into the gin. Fruity raspberry and soft vanilla absolutely take the lead here but, there is a slight hint of Love Gin lingering in the background.

With mixer

Unlike many liqueurs I’ve tried, I actually preferred Eden Mill’s Love Gin Liqueur with a mixer. An addition of tonic helped balance out some of the intense sweetness. However, with Elderflower Soda is where this gin really shone. The tart, floral notes of elderflower work perfectly with the syrupy, sweet raspberry and vanilla – making for a tasty and refreshing cocktail.

Lasting impressions

If you (or your loved one!) have got a sweet tooth, this is absolutely the gin for you. Eden Mill Love Gin Liqueur is packed full of syrupy, raspberry goodness. I can imagine pouring this over vanilla ice-cream for an extra naughty dessert. Gin purists may find this one a bit sweet but, it would make an excellent addition to any liqueur lovers collection!

You can pick up a bottle of Eden Mill Love Gin Liqueur at Aldi stores, or online on the Eden Mill website.
