I Love MCR Strawberry Jam Gin is a sweet and fruity gin, ideal for sipping in the summer months. Think: ripe British strawberries dipped in sugar, with a hint of juniper – what’s not to like?
A Little Bit of Background
I Love Manchester Strawberry Jam Gin is a collaboration between I Love MCR Gin and Mancunian jam legends F. Duerr & Sons. The gin is distilled and bottled exclusively for I Love MCR at the City of Manchester Distillery, culminating in gin that truly represents some of the finest that Manchester has to offer.
To create the perfect gin, the team at Duerr’s specially made a bespoke jam which compliments the flavours of the base gin. These ingredients are infused together in a custom made copper still, to produce a sweet and sticky strawberry gin.
While a lot of gins have extensive (and sometimes unnecessarily long) lists of botanicals, I Love MCR have kept their base gin ingredients to a minimum:
- Orris root
Add some Duerr’s custom-made jam and their Strawberry Jam Gin is born.
Strawberry Jam Gin’s bottle has the shape of a traditional gin bottle. The clear glass allows you to see the sweet, pink liquid that’s contained within.
Finally, the label itself is printed with a honeycomb pattern and is printed with the I Love MCR logo.
The Perfect Serve
The signature serve is as follows:
- 50ml I Love MCR Strawberry Jam Gin
- 150ml Double Butch tonic
- A handful of ice
- A few slices of fresh strawberry
On the Nose
Open a bottle of this gin and you are immediately greeted by the fresh scent of strawberry jam. The aroma reminds me a little of Eden Mill’s Love Gin Liqueur. However, less sickly sweet and with added strawberries and juniper.
On its own, this gin is rich and juicy. The sweet, floral fruitiness of strawberry comes through first, almost tasting like a strawberry bon-bon. However, there are also subtle hints of piney juniper that fight their way through on the finish. Overall, this is definitely sippable on its own but would taste even better served chilled on the rocks with a strawberry garnish.
First of all, in a 3:1 ratio of tonic to gin, this goes down an absolute treat. The tonic dilutes the sweet, richness of this gin and creates a fruity and refreshing G&T.
I also think this would work really well in a number of gin cocktails, such as a Bramble or a Pink Gin and Lemonade. Another great option would be to add this to a glass of prosecco or champagne – the possibilities really are endless.
In summary, I Love MCR Strawberry Jam Gin does exactly what it says on the tin: it’s a gin, that tastes a whole lot like strawberry jam. Lovers of flavoured gin, especially the berry varieties, should definitely pick up a bottle for summer G&Ts in the sun.
