Lidl has emerged triumphant from the 2019 Gin Masters Awards. They collected 8 awards in total, six golds and two silvers.
The tenth meeting of the annual gin awards was judged by bartenders, spirits journalists and spirits educators during a series of blind-tastings.
These experts judged that consistently, over different categories, Lidl’s own gins came out on top of the pile, beating spirits priced significantly higher – sometimes three times the price.
This is good news for people who like to pick up a bottle during the weekly shop from their local supermarket. You can be safe in the knowledge that you are getting a premium product at a competitive price.
The categories and gold awards picked up by Lidl were for Standard Gin: Hampstead Gin; London Dry: Finton’s London Dry Gin and Hortus Artisan Dry Gin; Flavoured Gin: Hortus Artisan Oriental Spiced Gin; Sloe Gin: Hortus Artisan Sloe Liqueur and Gin Liqueurs: Hortus Pomegranate and Rose Gin Liqueur.
Perhaps the most prestigious of their gold awards came in the Premium Gin (£16 – £20) category. Lidl’s own-label Scottish Aquine Gin was created in partnership with The Glasgow Distillery and the Scottish gin scooped gold.
It’s not the first time a Lidl gin has triumphed against pricier opposition. Last year Lidl’s Hortus Gin beat rivals in a blind taste test for the Good Housekeeping Institute.
Paul McQuade, Head of Buying for Scotland said: “Receiving such an outstanding award from the prestigious Gin Masters is testament to our commitment to offering the highest quality spirits at great prices”.
