Nothing says ‘winter’, or indeed Christmas, more than the sight of a live fir tree. Plus, it happens to make for a pretty magical ingredient in this winter gin recipe.

For the ultimate tribute to the season, we say turn your Christmas tree into something drinkable. All you need is a sprig of fir and some common ingredients you’d find it in your kitchen.

This recipe builds upon the idea of making your very own gin, but with a wintry twist.

Not to worry, however, if you’re feeling inspired by the concept but don’t feel so confident in reality to try it yourself. Did you know Rock Rose Winter Edition is made from spruce tips?

Whether you choose to buy a wintry gin or make your own, you’ll soon be enjoying your very own glass of heaven; beside the fireside entirely optional!

How to Make Your Own Winter Gin

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp juniper berries
  • 1 bottle (750 ml, or 3 1/4 cups) vodka
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp dried, cut, and sifted orange peel
  • 3 inch (7.5 cm) sprig fresh white fir or 1/2 sprig dried
  • 1 inch (2.5 cm) cinnamon stick
  • 1 whole allspice berry
  • 1 dried sage leaf
  • ½ dried bay leaf

Method

1.Begin by soaking juniper berries in the vodka in a bottle or mason jar for 12 hours or overnight.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients and infuse for another 24 hours.

3. Strain your gin into another mason jar using a sieve. You could also use a coffee filter or muslin cloth.

4. Leave the gin to infuse for a further two days and filter once more.

5. Serve your gin in your favourite glass and don’t forget to garnish with a sprig of fir on the side.

Note: The colour of your winter gin will likely turn a pale yellow  -not to worry, that’s the infusion at work!
