Capturing the enchantment of the Isle of Skye in a bottle was never going to be an easy task but Isle of Skye Distillers have achieved something special with Misty Isle Gin, a traditional and premium-quality gin.
A Little Bit of Background
Much like the extraordinary geographical features on the Isle of Skye, Misty Isle Gin has been a long time in the making. From their family home in Portree, the Wilson brothers – under the brand name Isle of Skye Distillers – patiently created a spirit, slowly perfecting the recipe bit by bit.
Provenance is everything to the brothers; small batch island-made gin including locally foraged juniper, a marriage of waters from the Storr Lochs and the right balance of the finest botanicals.
The botanicals in Misty Isle Gin are fairly traditional except for a secret ingredient that the makers won’t reveal except to say that it’s only found on Skye!
- Grains of paradise
- Black cubebs
- Cassia bark
- Liquorice root
- Angelica root
- Orris root
- Lemon peel
- Lemon verbena
- Secret ingredient
Anyone who has been to the Isle of Skye and visited the Fairy Glen will recognise something of the undulating layers of land in the way the glass bottle is stylishly cut just below the neck.
The almost ever-present clouds on the island are also represented on the charming bottle, upon which a wooden stopper seals in the gin.
On the Nose
The juniper is unmistakable on the nose; strong and pungent. Hovering somewhere in the background are small pockets of citrus waiting to be unleashed.
Budding gin connoisseurs will appreciate the quality of traditional botanicals here, they provide quite a kick. The addition of a premium tonic would be advised for a softer taste.
I tried mixing with Fever-Tree Aromatic Tonic Water which turned into a very well-balanced G&T.
The Cardamom and ginger of the tonic water brought out a gentle peppery heat at the back of the palate and the Madagascan Vanilla essence neutralised some of the stronger juniper notes, making for a smooth sip and a complex and appealing taste.
A lemon wedge revealed some of the citrus botanicals that were suggested on the nose.
The Perfect Serve
Isle of Skye Distillers suggest pouring 50ml Misty Isle Gin over ice, serving with a premium tonic and garnishing with a slice of orange peel.
Misty Isle Gin has premium quality gin written all over it. It’s not trying to do anything fancy or break the gin mould, but what it does do is top quality.
Mixing with a premium tonic balances the botanicals, creating a great all-rounder that is worthy of gracing any drinks cabinet.
The provenance of the gin; the pure Scottish loch water and capturing the enchantment of Skye just tips this gin ahead of similarly-priced rivals.
Misty Isle Gin (41.5% ABV) is available to buy from the Gin Kin Shop priced at £36 for a 70cl bottle and £16 for a 20cl bottle.
