Now, more than ever, it’s crucially important to support local, small distilleries. Here, we spotlight Wessex Spirits, and hope you join in with us by pouring your favourite serve at home.
Wessex Spirits is basically a one-woman operation: Kate Griffin. Kate launched Wessex Spirits as Test Valley Gin in 2017 from her grandad’s back garden. Inspired by her mum’s sloe gin, Kate wanted to create something completely different but just as delicious.
She says that as a former English teacher she was no stranger to drinking gin. Two children later and plenty more practice meant the the leap from drinking gin to making it wasn’t too great.
The Perfect G&T
For the perfect G&T: Pour Test Valley Gin into a glass with lots of ice, add Fevertree Indian Tonic Water and garnish with a handful of fresh thyme.
Since Test Valley Gin was introduced, Kate has added developed new gins, including Summer Solstice Gin, Spire Gin and more, now all released under the umbrella of Wessex Spirits.
After introducing the new brands of gin, Wessex Spirits found a home in Andover where a Tasting Room for exclusive events exists alongside the distillery. Kate said, “If you’d like to pop in to say hello or try a gin or two, do drop in at the Gin Palace in Andover. The bottles are always open!”
To create a Wessex G&T: Pour a measure of gin into a teacup, splash some apple juice and elderflower cordial and, just like that, drinking gin in the afternoon becomes civilised!
Test Valley Gin is a fresh and savoury gin, infused with fresh basil and fresh thyme. Summer Solstice Gin contains juniper, hibiscus, raspberries and redcurrants. Whilst Spire gin is a light and citrusy gin which is infused with natural lemon verbena.
Wessex Spirits gins are available to buy from the Gin Kin Shop.
